Christmas in Australia is a summer event pretending to be a winter one. The table is set for a hot lunch, the temperature is in the thirties, half the day happens outside and somebody is carving in the sun. Whatever you wear has to survive a morning in the kitchen and still look like a choice by one o'clock.
Start with how much of the day you are working
If you are hosting, dress for the kitchen first. That means a hem that does not brush the oven door, sleeves that stay out of the way, a colour that will not show a splash of oil, and shoes you can stand in for four hours. A printed midi dress in a mid-tone does all four.
