Coastal holidays in Australia have a predictable shape: beach in the morning, somewhere with a menu at lunch, a walk when the heat drops, and one evening where everyone makes a bit of an effort. Four settings, one suitcase. The trick is choosing pieces that appear in more than one of them.

Fabrics that survive sand and salt
Anything with texture, whether woven, crinkled, gauzy or tiered, hides creases from a suitcase and dries quickly after a swim. Smooth, stiff fabrics crease along the fold lines and stay that way unless you find an iron. Loose weaves also move air, which matters when you are walking in full sun.
Keep one slip or seamless layer in the bag for anything fine, and pack a spare tote for wet swimmers.
Shoes: two pairs, no more
A cushioned flat sandal takes the beach, the shops and the walk. A low wedge or block heel covers the one dressier night.
