Melba Lane is an online women's fashion store for customers in Australia. We opened in 2026. This page explains why we started it, how we work, and who we are, so you know exactly who you are buying from.

Why we started Melba Lane

The idea came from watching how badly served women over forty are by most online fashion. Not by the expensive end of the market, and not by the teenage end either, but by the ordinary middle, where most of us actually shop.

The pattern repeats everywhere. Size ranges that stop at AU 14, so the last two sizes are always the ones that sell out first. Dresses cut short enough that you have to check them in a mirror before leaving the house. Fabric thin enough to hold up to the light. Shoes offered in one width, as though every foot narrows the same way. And sizing charts written in American or European numbers, leaving you to convert and hope.

Then there is the pricing theatre. Sites where every item has been marked down from an invented original price, permanently, so the discount stops meaning anything. You end up not knowing what anything is actually worth.

We started Melba Lane to run a shop without those habits.

What we decided to do differently

Four decisions, and you can check all four for yourself on any product page.

Australian sizing, on every product. No conversion tables, no guessing. Sizes are listed in AU numbers on every item, with a size and fit guide on the product page, and where a style runs small or large we say so in the description instead of leaving you to find out.

Size ranges that go past AU 14. Most of our clothing continues well beyond the point where other shops stop, and our footwear is listed in AU 5 to AU 12 with wide fit styles included rather than treated as a separate category.

One honest price. We do not run permanent sales and we do not show struck-through prices next to an inflated original. The price you see is the price, and it is the same price tomorrow.

Free standard shipping, with nothing added at checkout. On every order, with no minimum spend, so you never have to add an item you do not want to reach a threshold.

Descriptions follow the same principle. We write what the item is: the neckline, the sleeve, the length, the closure, the sizes it runs in. If we cannot verify a fabric composition, we describe the material in general terms rather than print a fibre content we are not sure of.

How we actually work

We are a retailer, not a manufacturer. We do not design or make clothing. We select each style from the suppliers we work with, list it under our own product name, and stand behind it after you have bought it.

Orders are packed and dispatched by our fulfilment partner in Shenzhen, China, and sent directly to your address in Australia. We do not hold stock in Australia and we do not have a physical shop. Processing takes 1 to 3 business days and delivery within Australia usually takes a further 5 to 10 business days. We would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out from a tracking link. Full details are in our Shipping Policy.

We are new, and we would rather say so

Melba Lane opened in 2026. We do not have a wall of reviews yet and we are not going to invent one. What we can offer instead is a 30-day return window, a named company behind the shop with its registration details published on every page, and an answer to your email within 24 hours on business days.

If something is not right for you, you can request a return within 30 days of delivery, provided the item is unworn, unused and in its original condition. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is paid by the customer, and returns are handled through our international returns facility, so contact us first for the correct address. If an item arrives damaged, faulty or incorrect, we resolve it at our cost. All of this sits on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which we do not limit in any way. The conditions are in our Refund Policy.
