The wardrobe swap is usually done in one frustrated afternoon in October, and half of it gets undone a week later when the temperature drops again. A slower version works better: move things in three passes, a few weeks apart, and keep a small bridge of pieces that belong to both seasons.

Pass one: pack away the obvious

Heavy coats, thick wool, boots with a fleece lining, anything you only wear under fifteen degrees. Wash before storing, because marks set over a summer in a cupboard. Store folded rather than hung if the fabric is heavy, so the shoulders keep their shape.

Leave out one warm layer for cold nights. You will want it in November at least twice.

Pass two: keep the bridge pieces out

These are the items that work in both seasons and do most of the work in spring:

  • Fine knits and open cardigans. The single most useful spring layer. See knitwear.
  • Midi dresses with sleeves. Warm enough alone at twenty degrees, easy to layer under that. Browse midi dresses.
  • Closed flats and slingbacks. Not winter, not yet sandals. See flats.
  • Long-sleeved blouses. Under a set or on their own once the sun is out. See tops and blouses.

Pass three: bring summer forward gradually

Move the lighter dresses to the front of the wardrobe, not into it all at once. Sandals and beach pieces can stay stored until the run of warm weeks actually starts, which in most of the country is late November. The Spring Season edit is grouped for exactly this in-between stretch.

Be honest about what is not coming back

This is the part most of us skip. Three questions per item: did I wear it at all last spring, does it still fit the way I want it to, and would I buy it again today? Anything that fails two of the three is not a wardrobe piece, it is storage. Sell it, pass it on, or let it go while it still has some life in it.

What is worth adding, and in what order

If you are filling gaps rather than replacing everything, buy in this order: one midi dress with a sleeve, one light cardigan, one closed flat, then a matching set. That is four purchases and roughly ten outfits, and every piece keeps working into summer. Our spring outfit guide shows how they combine.

Common questions

When should I pack away my winter clothes in Australia?

Most of the southern states are safe from about the middle of October for heavy coats, and December for the last warm layer. In Queensland and the north the heavy pieces can usually go a month earlier.

What should I do with clothes I am not sure about?

Put them in a separate bag rather than back in the wardrobe. If you have not gone looking for anything in that bag by the end of the season, the decision has made itself.

Do I need different dresses for spring and summer?

Not many. A midi with a sleeve covers both; a strappy or very light dress only covers the second. The cuts that cope with real heat are covered in choosing summer dresses for hot weather.
