Spring here is not one season, it is three weathers in a single day. You leave the house at fifteen degrees, you are standing in full sun by eleven, and there is a wind off the water by four. Dressing for that is less about buying spring clothes and more about building outfits that can change temperature without changing shape.
Work in three layers, not two
The winter habit is a heavy layer over a thin one. Spring works better with three light ones: a top you are comfortable in on its own, an open layer you can carry, and a bottom half that is not doing any insulating. That way the outfit looks the same at nine in the morning and two in the afternoon, with one piece over your arm.
A fine knit cardigan is the most useful of those middle layers, because it folds into a bag and does not look like it was meant for winter. See knitwear.
The dress plus layer formula
The easiest spring outfit is a midi dress with something open over the top. It solves the temperature swing in one move, it needs no coordination, and it reads as considered rather than thrown together.
Look for a hem at mid-calf, a sleeve if you would rather not rely on the layer, and a waist you can define. Start in midi dresses, or the wider Spring Season edit.
Trousers and sets for the cooler weeks
Early spring is often still trouser weather. A matching set does the same job as a dress and gives you two more outfits, because the pieces separate: the top with trousers you already own, the bottoms with a blouse. See two-piece sets and tops and blouses.
Shoes first, then the rest
Nothing dates a spring outfit faster than winter shoes. A closed flat, a woven slingback or a low wedge all read as the new season while still covering your foot on a cold morning. Full sandals can wait a few weeks in the southern states. This is covered properly in what shoes to wear in spring.
Four outfits that cover a spring week
- Errands: printed midi dress, cardigan, closed flats, cross-body bag.
- Lunch out: plain midi or shirt dress, woven slingback, one gold necklace.
- Cool morning, warm afternoon: matching set, cami underneath, low wedge.
- Something on: occasion midi and a block heel. See Races & Occasion if that something is a race meeting.
Common questions
What do I wear in spring when mornings are cold but afternoons are hot?
Put the warmth in a layer you can remove, never in the base of the outfit. A dress or set with a cardigan works; a heavy top with a light jacket does not, because you cannot take the heavy part off.
Is it too early for a sleeveless dress?
Not if you have a layer with you. A sleeveless midi with a fine knit over the shoulders is a spring outfit; the same dress alone is a summer one. Our guide to spring dresses goes through sleeve options.
Which pieces are worth buying now rather than in December?
Anything that layers: a midi dress with a sleeve, a light cardigan, a closed flat. Pure summer pieces hold their value better if you wait, and the range widens closer to the heat.
