The sole is wrapped in jute in the espadrille way, and it runs from the toe through to the heel so the foot sits on one continuous slope. Across the front, the upper is knotted into a soft bow that sits flat rather than standing up.

The platform under the toe closes some of the gap to the heel, which is what keeps the whole sandal level underfoot.
